Brave Gowns Inspire and Comfort Children in Hospitals

Investment advisor and philanthropist David Simon established Twin Capital Management, LLC, 30 years ago. Today, Twin Capital provides investors with numerous opportunities in the alternative investment and hedge fund arenas. Among David Simon’s charitable endeavors was co-founding the Starlight Children’s Foundation annual Westchester golf outing. Starlight Children’s Foundation works to provide children in hospitals with fun and laughter through carefully designed outreach projects and partnerships.

In 2016, Starlight Children’s Foundation began its Brave Gowns initiative. This program aims to make hospital stays less impersonal and frightening for children by giving them hospital gowns created to look like the costumes worn by superheroes, princesses, astronauts, and other characters they love.

The project is based on an idea from an entrepreneur who lost her brother to a terminal illness. Wanting to make things better for other children engaged in similar battles, she created an entirely new kind of gown for them. Brave Gowns provide more comfort and privacy than standard-issue hospital gowns while still allowing for the various medical procedures that need to be performed. And because they are so packed with personality, they let each child’s own superhero nature shine through.

Brave Gowns have drawn increasing media attention, and several hospitals have even adopted them as their standard gowns for child patients. To date, Starlight Children’s Foundation gowns based on the Brave Gowns design have reached approximately 150,000 children across the country.
