Supporting Hospitalized Children and Their Families

Hospitalization can be a frightening experience for young children as well as their parents and siblings. Here are a few ways hospital staff and administrators help families as they go through a very difficult time.

- By making the environment cheerful

Children are very sensitive to their surroundings, and the plain interior of a hospital can feel alienating. In many hospitals, the children’s ward is decorated with vibrant colors and images of familiar cartoon characters and other figures, all of which helps children settle in.

- By keeping children informed

Even in the case of young children, it's important for them to understand their illness and their treatment. Hospital staff must keep an open line of communication with both the child and their parents so that all family members can understand their options and responsibilities. Children are much more likely to adhere to their treatment plan if they play a role in the decision-making process.
